Grocery Shopping at Half Price!!!

Oooo! I love a great deal. I've done so well this week, too, so I've got to share.

I like to do one large shopping trip each month, and do a lot of freezing. I break things into smaller sizes and freeze things like bread, butter, cheese, and smoothie supplies (bananas, strawberries, and spinach). I've tried to freeze milk, but I never remember to pull it out in time. I've also tried freezing cream cheese and yogurt. Umm....... not recommended, although I had a friend who did it, and was somehow successful at it.  

Gary and I saved 50% on our large run for groceries this week. Fifty percent to some people is not a whole lot, but to a family our size, that's huge! Like over $300 huge. We did it by using a website that gives all the sales for the week, and then we go to Walmart and price match. (When someone pops up in line behind me, I like to warn them before they stand there too long.) There are many different sites out there. The one we use is dealstomeals.com. We pay $4.95 a month to use it, and we have to sign saying we won't pass any deals along, but since the deal is past I will give you an example. We got seven cucumbers for $.99. Not bad. It takes quite a bit of time, mind you, but $300? That's cool!

  1. I have to ask. How do you get the bread not to get soggy when thawing it out? We have frozen ours before but when we take a loaf out it always gets soggy from the bread thawing.

  2. Great question. I love my bread toasted, so that's what I usually do whether it's been in the freezer or not. But my children don't. We have a bread warmer on our toaster that works well for this because it takes some of the moisture out of it, but doesn't dry it too much. When we put it in the microwave, it is yucky, UNLESS you use my son, Jonny's, trick. He puts it on top of a cup and cooks it for 10 or so seconds. The moisture drops to the bottom of the cup, and he has a yummy slice of bread.

    And my children are not big fans of the frozen cheese because it becomes crumbly. For me, who does the budget, crumbly cheese is worth saving $2.00 a brick.

  3. How do you tell the cashier of your deals. Do you print coupons or just list our the items and tell them the 'matched price' as you go?

  4. Easy-peasy. I show up with a shopping list and the prices listed next to them (that I have printed off the website). You just tell them the price. They usually know the deals because so many people have done them before you. You don't need to tell them the store name or anything. If they think it is fishy, they will look it up. It's so very cool!

  5. Oooo, my dear childhood friend tells me that Grandma Sycamore's bread freezes really well and defrosts without getting soggy. Now that's cool. What's even better is she says you can buy it for $1.00 at the Sara Lee Bread Store at 2182 West 4700 South. That's a bit far for me to drive (even for a good deal), but there are others of you that are close and could use that little bit of info. Happy bread freezing!!!

  6. If you shred your cheese before you freeze it, that works really well.

    There's a Sara Lee Bread store in American Fork on state street, right off of Pioneer Crossing. They often have extremely cheap bread. And you get a free item off of a particular rack when you spend $10. I freeze bread too, and rarely have problems with it being soggy once it's defrosted. If it's been in the freezer for a while, I'll open the bag and shake out the ice before I defrost it.
